Terms of Membership
Last updated ——
The short version. A membership is a year, paid up front. It renews each year unless you switch that off, and we’ll always write to you three weeks before we charge you. You can have a full refund any time before your first delivery ships. After that the year isn’t refundable, but you keep every delivery you paid for. Gifts never renew.
The rest of this page says the same things more carefully.
1. Who we are
The Vintage Letter Writing Society is operated by Lawson Stationery, a sole proprietorship based in North Carolina (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at [email protected].
By joining the Society or buying from the Shoppe you agree to these terms.
2. What a membership is
A membership runs for one year and entitles you to twelve monthly deliveries. Each delivery contains six double-sided sheets of hand-painted writing paper, two coordinating envelopes, and a monthly topic with prompts.
Each month’s design is a surprise. We don’t publish themes in advance, and the specific artwork, colours and papers vary month to month. We may vary the contents where a design calls for it, but every delivery will contain writing paper, envelopes and prompts.
3. Prices and payment
- The Yearly Membership — $180 per year, one member.
- You & a Penpal — $300 per year, two members at two addresses ($150 each).
- A gift membership — $180, paid once. It does not renew.
Prices are in US dollars and include standard shipping within the United States. Payment is taken in full at the start of each year.
Payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card details. Applicable sales tax, if any, is calculated at checkout.
We may change our prices, but never for a year you have already paid for. If a price changes before your renewal, we’ll tell you in the renewal notice described below.
4. Automatic renewal
Memberships renew automatically each year so your deliveries don’t stop. When you join, you agree to this and it is stated on the payment page before you pay.
Before every renewal:
- We will email you about three weeks in advance — never fewer than 15 days, and never more than 45 days — telling you the date the membership renews and the amount we will charge.
- If anything about the membership is changing at renewal, that change will be set out clearly in that same notice.
- You can switch renewal off at any time, in one click, from your account. It is no harder than joining was.
- Switching it off does not shorten the year you already paid for. You keep every remaining delivery.
Gift memberships never renew. They are a single payment for twelve deliveries, and the recipient is never asked for a card.
5. Refunds and cancellation
Set out in full on our Refunds & Shipping page. In short: a full refund is available any time before your first delivery ships; after that the year is non-refundable; and cancelling means switching off renewal rather than ending deliveries you have paid for.
6. Deliveries
We ship within the United States only. Deliveries go out around the first of each month.
Getting your address right is your responsibility. You can update it from your account at any time, and changes take effect from the next delivery we haven’t yet packed. We can’t recover a delivery sent to an address you gave us that was out of date.
7. Gift memberships
You may buy a membership for someone else. Deliveries ship to them, the membership does not renew, and they are never asked for payment details.
The refund window for a gift runs until the first delivery ships, and belongs to the person who paid.
8. You & a Penpal
The pair membership covers two members at two addresses under a single payment. The person who pays provides the second member’s name, email and postal address at checkout.
By giving us those details you confirm that you have that person’s permission to share their address and email with us for the purpose of sending them deliveries and membership emails. If they ask us to stop, we will.
Only the person who paid can renew, change or cancel the membership. The second member has no billing access and cannot see the payer’s payment details.
If a pair membership is not renewed, both memberships end when the paid year ends.
9. Pausing
If letters are stacking up unwritten, write to us and we’ll hold your deliveries. Your membership extends by the same amount, so you never lose a delivery you have paid for.
10. The Shoppe
Past collections appear in the Shoppe sixty days after members receive them, in limited quantities. Members pay member prices and are not charged shipping.
Shoppe items are sold subject to availability. If we can’t fulfil an order we’ll refund it in full.
11. When something goes wrong
If a delivery arrives damaged, or doesn’t arrive at all, tell us and we’ll put it right — normally by sending a replacement. Paper and post don’t always agree with each other, and that’s not your problem to absorb.
12. Our artwork
Every design is original artwork by Hannah Lawson and remains her property. You’re very welcome to write on it, send it, frame it, and photograph it.
Please don’t reproduce, resell or use the designs commercially without written permission. If you’d like to, ask — the answer may well be yes.
13. Your account
You’re responsible for the email address on your account and for anything done through it. Tell us promptly if you think someone else has access.
We may end a membership if an account is used fraudulently or abusively, or if a payment is reversed. In that case no refund is due.
If we end your membership for any other reason — if we stop trading, say — we will refund the months you have paid for and not received. That is the one circumstance in which a refund is given after the year has begun, and it exists because it would be our doing rather than yours.
14. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we’ll email you before it takes effect. Changes never apply retroactively to a year you have already paid for.
15. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of North Carolina, United States.
Our automatic renewal practices are intended to meet North Carolina General Statute § 75-41, which governs contracts with automatic renewal clauses.
Nothing here limits any right you have under consumer protection law that cannot be limited by agreement.
